How to Clean your Running Shoes
To clean your running shoes, you will need these items:
- Mild detergent or soap.
- A soft fabric
- A soft scrubbing brush, or you can use an old toothbrush
- A sponge
- Some paper towels
- Warm water
Steps to wash and clean your running shoes:
Step 1. First, you need to clean the shoe parts. In this regard, take out all the parts, such as laces and insoles, and clean them properly.
Step 2. Now, fill a bucket with warm water and pour 15-30ml of household soap or mild detergent.
Step 3. Next, grab paper towels, and remove caked grime and mud from your shoes.
Step 4. At this step, take a soft scrubber or an old toothbrush and dip it in warm and soapy water.
Step 5. After that, start cleaning the shoe outsoles. Scrub properly with your hand. You can also wash it with a wet sponge or towel.
Step 6. Next, you can clean the shoe uppers but be careful as it is the most delicate part of the shoe. Besides, every shoe has a different upper. Some shoe uppers are made up of textile, canvas, fabric, mesh, or leather. Identify that, take a damp, soapy sponge, and gently scrub the shoe upper.
Step 7. While cleaning your running shoes, never submerge them in water, and don’t wash suede, Nubuck, or leather uppers with water.
Step 8. After cleaning the soles and uppers, it’s time to wash the shoe insoles with soapy water. Rub the surface properly with an old toothbrush and remove the dirt. You can also use a wet sponge. However, never soak the shoe inserts in water as it can damage the foam.
Step 9. After that, clean the shoelaces. You can do that with a scrubber and soapy water.
Step 10. After cleaning all these parts, keep them in the open air to dry and stuff paper towels or old newspapers inside them. The paper towels or newspapers will absorb moisture, and your running shoes will not lose shape.
However, never place the shoes or their parts under direct sunlight. Similarly, don’t use a hairdryer on your running shoes.
Step 11. When your running is dried, pour some baking soda inside them. This will absorb and remove residual moisture and bad odor.
How Wash Running Shoes In Washing Machine
If you’re a fan of running shoes, then you know how important it is to keep them clean. But did you know that you can wash them in the washing machine? It’s true! Just follow these steps, and your shoes will be good as new.
Steps To Machine Wash Running Shoes:
If your running shoes are starting to smell like a locker room, it might be time to give them a good wash. But before you toss them in the washing machine, there are a few things you should know. First, check the label to make sure your shoes are machine-safe.
Step 1: To check that, look under the shoe tongue or check the product manual. Generally speaking, running shoes made up of cotton, nylon, or polyester are machine washable.
Step 2: Next, remove the dirt and grime from your shoes with a soft cleaning brush. You can also use a toothpick or toothbrush to remove caked grime.
Step 3: Next, take out the shoelaces and insole to clean them properly.
Step 4: Now, put your running shoes, insoles, and shoelaces in a robust bag or pillowcase. Never put your running shoes in your washing machine as it will damage them. So, put all shoe components in a bag and toss them in the machine.
Another essential thing to note here is that if you are using gel or custom insoles, don’t put them in the machine; instead, wash them by hand.
Step 5: When throwing your running shoes, shoelaces, and insoles in the machine, add some old towels. This is because your shoes might make some weird noises or bounce in the machine. That is why add 2–3 old towels into the machine when throwing the shoes inside.
Step 6: Start your washing machine and ensure that it remains on a soft and gentle cycle while functioning. Similarly, use an only mild detergent to clean your running shoes. Turn your washing machine on cold water and let it do the rest.
While cleaning your running shoe in a washing machine, never use hot water, as it can be lethal for your shoes and their components.
Step 7: When cleaning is completed, take your stuff out and put some paper towels or old newspapers in your shoes. Furthermore, put all these items in an open space for drying. Ideally, you should leave your running shoes in the open air for at least 12 hours to dry out completely.
Step 8: Another vital point is that if your running shoes are dryer safe, you can dry them inside a dryer on the gentle or lowest cycle.
However, never put them under direct sunlight, and don’t use any other kind of heat on your running shoes.
In The End:
Now that you know how to clean your running shoes, there’s no excuse for having a smelly pair. Just be sure to give them a good scrubbing at least once a week, and they should stay fresh (and not cause any foot fungus).
And if you really want to take care of them, consider investing in a shoe cleaner or waterproofing spray. Happy running!
